Creating Video Lessons
Teaching with video is not only about having great resources, bandwidth and hardware access available to teachers and students. It's also about clearly assessing the level of progress your district is at, and matching resources that will move the teachers from one level to the next, transforming experiences and attitudes.
Most educators know video content is a highly effective teaching tool because it’s so engaging for students raised in today’s video age. Furthermore, because the Internet has become such an ingrained part of children and teenagers daily lives, students respond particularly well to streaming digital video and related online teaching tools, like online quizzes and study guides. Over the years, research has repeatedly demonstrated that the use of video in the classroom can positively impact learning. Students process visual information 600,000 times faster than text, and visual aids can improve learning by 400% (3M, 2001). However, creating an effective and engaging lesson plan incorporating digital video can be challenging to even the savviest of teachers. It is not unusual for teachers to find the task of implementing video into daily classroom activities daunting. In many cases it’s difficult to know what video will best complement the concept or learning objective at hand. (Miguel Guhlin)
Video announcement and students production
Imagine the possibilities: The school principal could broadcast a video of him as news program addressing the school students with video support. For example, an announcement of the school basket ball winning the Inter-Schools Championships can be coupled up with a video of the team playing during the competition and lifting up the trophy. A school event like the Swimming Carnival can be publicized through the school like an advertisement. It can also be used as an avenue to show various works of students. Example, a group of student artist can let his work be known by broadcasting a video of his work to the school. It can also be used in a creative way to expand the general knowledge of students by showing a quiz through broadcasting. Interviews too, can be conducted in a broadcasting studio and recorded down in a video to be broadcasted to other students in the school.
Teaching a lesson in the studio ?
A lesson studio definitely bring the creativity juices of both teachers and students. The teacher will be able to design teaching content using video technology under a professional broadcast setting. For example a teacher demonstrating the use of a vernier calipers can be filmed down by the school video team in the studio and get a copy of the video straight away after the demonstration. The student can also make use of the studio facilities to film down certain school projects. The output video would definitely have an impact factor in presentation.
The sights, sounds, and interactive media that engage and motivate today’s digital generation are often missing from the classroom. Video can truly enhance learning and fun, providing a more compelling and effective learning environment for today’s students. The lesson studio will give students more ways than ever before to research, collaborate, communicate, express their ideas, and share what they have learned.
