In 1996, the television industry woke up to a worldwide revolution in the broadcast chain – Digital Video (DV) had arrived. From acquisition and signal processing to manipulation and delivery, the DV format would make analogue broadcast systems unwieldy and obsolete.

At that time, very few professionals were willing to believe that DV would replace analogue video so rapidly. But there were also others who saw the digital writing on the wall. One of them was Derrick Ang.

Ten years earlier, Derrick had begun his career as a film products salesman in Singapore, his hometown, working with the firm Barry H Warta, a regional reseller for the German giant ARRI.

Derrick trained extensively in Germany to work with ARRI cameras and lighting and also with Sennheiser, which had moved into Asia. In 1992, when Transmarco bought Barry H Warta, Derrick left to jointly set up Cine Equipment, which offered systems integration, design and technical services.

Four years later, when DV made its debut, Derrick saw the possibilities ahead. Film was slowly fading and analogue, although still king, was on the way out. DV was the future – but although the analogue market was saturated with resellers, no one was selling DV.

Armed with little more than determination and a keen mind, Derrick launched his own start-up with the first letters of the segments he would target – Light Sound & Video. It was called LSV.

“We started very, very small. Our total business was just around $100,000 to $300,000 a year. We had no exclusive dealerships at all,” recalls Derrick.

That would soon change. Impressed by the extensive contacts base that LSV developed in just a few years and by the sales force's quick grasp of every product line's best-selling feaures, a host of world-renowned manufacturers soon came calling.

In the last 10 years, LSV has grown to become one of Singapore's most reputed resellers and solutions providers in broadcast and IT. Its key strengths remain what they were in the beginning: deep product knowledge, the best possible levels of service and support and the highest standards in business ethics.
